John F. Black, an owner/broker of West Wood Realty, has been in real estate for more than 40 years. He specializes in vacant land sales and project development in the Albuquerque and Rio Rancho Metropolitan area. John originally developed a 1,150 acre planned community known as the “Seven Bar Ranch”. This 1150 acres was the eastern portion of the original 20,500 acre ranch and farm in Northwest Albuquerque. The name Seven Bar Ranch was derived from the families ranch brand which was a 7 on the right shoulder & / (“bar”).

As the Managing Partner in the Seven Bar Land and Cattle Company, John planned, re-zoned, and developed and/or sold over 400 acres of commercial land in Seven Bar Ranch and the balance was a blend of high density and medium density residential development. The keystone project in the retail portion of the project was the 95 acres of ground leased and later sold to the Simon Group for their company’s 1.2 million square foot Cottonwood Regional Mall. Other featured retail developments in this project were the 41 acre Cottonwood Plaza and Cottonwood Corners, and the Lowes & Dick’s Sporting Goods power centers located within the Seven Bar Ranch in northwest Albuquerque. Alameda West, Corrales Center, and Las Tiendas shopping centers were also developed by the Black Family. These projects are all doing well and total over 3.8 million square feet of retail which is by far the largest retail shopping area in the state of New Mexico. John is currently working on a joint venture with other investors on an even larger master planned project known as the Quail Ranch, which consists of 6,500 acres of the original Black Ranch. Quail Ranch is zoned for 25,000 residential units and over 10 million square feet of commercial and industrial uses. The Paradise Hills and Ventana Ranch, and Black Farms projects were also part of the original 20,500 acre Black Ranch.

John has been a partner and developer in several other major developments outside of the Seven Bar ranch. He developed the Promenade Shopping Center in Northeast Albuquerque, Montano Y Cuatro Plaza and Coors Central Shopping Center in Northwest Albuquerque.

John Black is currently working with the West Wood development team on several new retail projects in the City of Rio Rancho, one of the nation’s fastest growing cities. John is a partner in two planning and development lease projects with the State Land Office of New Mexico. These properties are in the northern area of the City of Rio Rancho. City Centre project is a 140 acre new urban downtown development in Downtown Rio Rancho. The 530 ace Paseo Gateway mixed use project fronts on the new Paseo del Volcan west side freeway (the only new Metro freeway in Central New Mexico since the 1960’s). Paseo Gateway features the new LEED certified V. Sue Cleveland High School in Rio Rancho and the best future residential and commercial land in the City of Rio Rancho. John Black has served over ten years on the Board of the Laguna Development Corporation, a multi-million dollar company operating a hotel and casino, a super market, travel centers, restaurants and over 1,200 employees in the West Metro area. John is a member of the Sandoval Economic Alliance, the Rio Rancho Chamber of Commerce, the Albuquerque Economic Development Corporation, the Albuquerque Economic Forum, and the US Bank Community Advisory Committee. John Black has been a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) and the Albuquerque Board of Realtors for over forty years John and his wife have also been members of the United Way Alexis de Tocqueville United Way philanthropic group for almost 20 years.
